Best for

Best for guided progression in this stage of practice.

1. Read the core idea 2. Study the worked example 3. Practice the related drills

Core idea

Learn how to increase speed while keeping the total stable, the rhythm controlled, and errors small enough to catch quickly.

Objectives

  • Increase pace without giving up full-number reading.
  • Notice when rhythm is causing drift before the answer is lost.
  • Use quick checks to recover accuracy during denser practice.

Quick check

Mini checks for speed control

  • After 74 + 8, what total must stay clear before the subtraction begins?
  • Why is 79 the most important checkpoint in the worked example?
  • When the rhythm feels unstable, what should you protect first: speed or the full running total?

What is 74 + 8 - 3 + 12?

Attempt first, then check.

Advanced soroban is not only about faster hands or faster thought. It is about staying readable while the pace rises.

Core idea

Speed becomes useful only when it preserves three things:

  • the running total
  • the sign of the next move
  • a quick way to detect drift

Worked example: 74 + 8 - 3 + 12

  1. Start from 74.
  2. Add 8 to reach 82.
  3. Subtract 3 to reach 79.
  4. Add 12 to reach 91.

This sequence is not hard because of the numbers. It is hard because the rhythm changes twice.

Error-check rule

Use one short safety check after each move:

  1. Does the new total feel larger or smaller in the right direction?
  2. Did the last operation affect the correct place?
  3. Can you still say the full total, not only the last digit?

Common mistakes

  • Going faster after a correct step and losing the next sign.
  • Only hearing the last digit and forgetting the whole number.
  • Continuing after a suspected drift instead of checking immediately.

Practice habit

Use timed worksheets only after you can keep the running total stable in untimed sets. Speed should reveal structure, not destroy it.

Next step

Use practice mode for immediate repetition, or open worksheets for denser drill sets tied to this level and skill.
